Liza Jones has thirty days to write the thriller that could put her back on the bestseller list. In the meantime, she’s struggling to start a family with her husband, who is distracted by the disappearance of his best friend, Nick. With stresses weighing down in both her professional and her personal life, Liza escapes into writing her latest heroine. Beth is a new mother who suspects her husband is cheating on her while she’s home alone providing for their newborn. Angry and betrayed, Beth sets out to catch him in the act and make him pay for shattering the illusion of their perfect life. But before she realizes it, she’s tossing the body of her husband’s mistress into the river. Then the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur. Nick’s body is dragged from the Hudson and Liza’s husband is arrested for his murder. Before her deadline is up, Liza will have to face up to the truths about the people around her, including herself. If she doesn’t, the end of her heroine’s story could be the end of her own.

What is the line between what’s real and what’s not?
On one hand, there is Liza, a young writer who is struggling to get back on the bestseller list. Her new book, a thriller, is giving her a really hard time, but on top of that, the relationship with her husband – who’s dealing with the mysterious disappearance of his best friend, David — seems to get worse by the day. On the other hand, we have Beth, a new mom who’s just found out that her beloved husband is cheating on her with a beautiful woman, while she’s home taking care of their baby, Victoria. As time passes by, things get more and more confusing. Reality fades into fantasy, and the lives of Liza and Beth intertwine with one another.

“I don’t invent my characters. I steal them from my surroundings. To be a writer is to be a life thief. Every day, I rob myself blind.”

As many of you already know, when it comes to thrillers, I can never bring myself to say “no”. So, when I got the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of Lies she told, I immediately dived into it. From the very start, I was intrigued by both Liza and Beth, by their lives and what they were going through, although, sometimes, it got a bit difficult to understand what was really going on. It takes a few pages to actually get used to Cate Holahan’s writing style, but, when you do, the book reads really well. I loved the fact that I could not tell what happened until the very end, which, if you ask me, should be the main prerogative of every thriller novel. To be honest, the only thing that annoyed me was the fact that, at a certain point, things start to sound a bit too similar, and keeping up with the storyline of every character can get a bit challenging.

“Blurring fact and fantasy is my trade. I am a con artist. A prevaricator. I make up stories.”

Nonetheless, this is a novel I would definitely recommend you, if you feel like you might enjoy it.
